What would be a great starter DSLR camera?

I am looking for a DSLR camera that isn't to complicated. its going to be my first DSLR camera so i don't want to get to over whelmed, but at the same time i want it to have a pretty good amount of things because i plan on having the camera for a while. I'm going to be taking a lot of portraits, and of people in the outdoors. So i would like it to be very good at taking them, with other features. Is there any cameras you suggest that are decently priced (poor bartender in a small town) and would fit my needs?
